Promise of a Garden

Nature was a faithful companion in lockdown. In moorland, wood and pasture, in parks, allotments, on window sills and back gardens, it nourished us through the difficulties of illness and lockdown. The Promise of a Garden at Leeds Playhouse was a celebration of our green-fingered and creative city – a sharing of what nature has meant to us over this hard year, and of what we mean to each other too.

From 18th August until 21st August we transformed the Quarry Theatre, at Leeds Playhouse, into a horticultural haven where a company of older artists shared their personal stories, visions and dreams of times past, present and future as they create the garden out of nothing before your eyes

The Promise of a Garden blended performance, dance, music, film and photography to create blossoming moments of joy and reflection as we begin to explore and gather strength in the new post pandemic normal.

Created by The Performance Ensemble under the artistic direction of Alan Lyddiard. Original music by Christopher Benstead. Choreography by Tamara McLorg

A Leeds Playhouse, The Performance Ensemble, Leeds Older People’s Forum and Leeds 2023 co-production.
